Moral development
This nearly sounds old fashioned, but also necessary in today’s world.
Understanding what is good and bad is a big question for 6 year olds. Moral development happens naturally during the Primary years and children find out what others accept and what not. Developing naturally does not mean that it happens automatically. This part of the development only happens when the psychological environment surrounding the child, aids the process.
Adults cannot be mere onlookers, but need to play an active part. In school we help children to respect the limits of others, both inside and outside. Classes live like extended families. Teachers are with the children also at playtime. The unspoken motto is “your freedom stops, where someone else’s freedom begins”. Conflict resolution involves talking and looking at a conflict from the other stakeholders' point of view. Good and bad have many shades of grey. Being able to reason about that, to stop and think and to become empathetic to others are part of this learning process.
