Visit to Laar and Berg High School, The Netherlands

The Inservice Day of the Middle School staff involved a visit to the Laar and Berg High School in Laren, the Netherlands, made up of 850 students.

Amongst seven others Middle Schools in the Netherlands, this school is since 2003 an IBO MYP World School.

Laar and Berg offers besides the IBO MYP program, also the HAVO and VWO sections (can be compared to the European or International Baccalaureate).

We received a very informative guided tour and were given the opportunity to change ideas with the Head of School, Mr. Ruud Stoelinga and the co-ordinator of the MYP program, Ms Rynette de Villiers.

Like us they also offer a bilingual environment to their students. In this case English – Dutch.

During the day we were also given the opportunity to participate in a variety of lessons whilst viewing the facilities. The students who had completed the program continued the final two years of their high school education in the VWO and by then were fluent in English. This proved to be one of the main motivators for students and their parents to choose the MYP program.

The way back to Brussels was just long enough to digest our impressions and make new plans for our group of students.
