Creative development

Creativity indicates producing something new, being it a new process or a new product. Innovation is an important aspect of modern society and in the Montessori class this is stimulated within all areas of curriculum. In an emotionally safe environment, children can feel free to express themselves and go beyond their comfort zone.

Creative processes of the mind

The mind can be very creative and make new connections. Finding solutions and developing different levels of awareness is stimulated by the way of teaching. In our school, all subjects are interrelated. When the Pythagoras theorem is studied from a mathematical squaring point of view, the story of the Egyptians, the flooding of their land by the Nile and the related tax system is told. Pythagoras was able to deduce a theory from a concrete experience, and by referring to this we show the children the reason of the existence of the abstract theorem and let them experience that this algebraic formula was a true invention!

By interrelating the subjects, children integrate their knowledge and come up with innovative ideas themselves, just like Pythagoras. The creativity of the mind provides the flexibility for the future. It also stimulates the urge of wanting to find out more and enjoying research processes.

An outstanding example of today’s creative minds, are the founders of Google. The two men,                    , who developed the Google search engine, experienced during their pre-school and primary years Montessori education. They stated in a recent television interview, that the greatest benefit of this open-minded education allowed them
“…to think out of the box”.

Creative products

mona_lisa Art and Craft is interrelated in all subjects and is a subject by itself. The Toddlers and preschool children have activities available in such a way that children can perform these independently. The fine motor skills are stimulated and the concentration span is expanded. Primary children create often in relation to the subjects discussed. When housing across the world has been studied, they might make a Thai dwelling, or when they read about the functioning of the volcano, a ‘real’ one will be made in the sandpit. Middle School children study different techniques at an advanced level and make a portfolio. They also relate the techniques to professions such as furniture making and artistic renovations.

piano Music: Music sessions are part of the daily routine with children up to age 6. They have a large song repertoire and use percussion instruments, action songs and dance. The older children have music as part of their weekly routine. They sing in class, sometimes accompanied by the guitar and go to their instrument lessons.

Every child in Primary and Middle School play an instrument!
They can choose between the violin, piano or guitar. Children receive individual or groups lessons depending on their age, instrument and music studied. Two professional music teachers provide the lessons and the instruments can be heard all week.

on_stage Drama: Small performances are done throughout the year. Children prepare small plays, poems and songs and perform for each other.

Yearly production: The Spring Term is used for the preparation of the big production! Children can participate at all levels. The aim is to help them grow and at the same time feel good about themselves! This means that there are no auditions, children, help creating personalities, write text, grow into their roles, find clothes and make props. Slowly but surely this organic process becomes a wonderful and exiting performance including song, dance, musical instruments, text and a wonderful atmosphere!!

cancan The Montessori Theatre Company:

The current Middle School together with graduates, teachers and other interested individuals have formed their own Theatre Company under the creative guidance of Stephanie Cnudde. Last year’s performance ‘Wanted’ was the story of two young adults living in the West trying to find their unique path in life. The performance was well done! Beautiful props, sounds, dance and song delighted the audience!!
