Visit to Botanical Garden

Visit 1 to the National Botanical Garden of Belgium

The first half of the students of the Lower Primary of the Tervuren location went to the Botanical Garden of Belgium in Meise. Following an old dutch tradition, by bringing a variety and interesting collection of umbrellas the children could enjoy of nice sunny weather.

From the moment of arrival at the domain Quintin Groom, the father of Julian and Tom, took care of us and provided us with many small interesting insights in the life of plants. In particular he extended our understanding of the seeds of plants. This little and sometimes not so little item came 350.000.000 years ago to the earth and hasn’t left us since.

His presentation of a collection of indeginous seeds from Peru, Congo and a worldwide selection of beans triggered the children’s imagination and resulted in an enjoyable drawing session in the Spring House. When looking more closely at and trying to capture the essence of plant life on paper, slowly but surely time disappeared.

The overwhelming aspect of time returned when we entered the section dedicated to Darwin: Evolution. We were given the chance to follow the development of life on earth starting at the Pre-Cambrian, going to the Cambrian with models of the fascinating oldest living creatures at earth, the stromatolites of Western Australia, followed by the Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, … You know the others!

Next week Tuesday, the other half of the group will pay a visit and more news will follow.
